Fall in Canaan 2007 : Big Clare came to visit to see the fall leaves in Canaan. We had a lovely time and the leaves were spectacular. Most of our explorations were within a short distance of Thomas and Davis - so much to see, so close to home. A big THANKS to Mama for coming out to the hinterlands!

The Structure : The house, dubbed Buxton Manor by friends, is located near the intersection of Buxton and 2nd Sts. in Thomas, WVA. It was built in 1920 late in the town's coal boom and was owned by the Lencheks, Lithuanian immigrants, for more than 80 years. We purchased it in late 2004 and have been fixing it up and enjoying the pace of life in Tucker County.

Fruits, Vegetables, Flowers : The yard at Buxton Outpost in Thomas is full of surprises. Years ago, someone carefully planted flowers along the fence so that color stretches from Snow Drops in the early spring to Chinese Lanterns in the fall. There are also sugar maples, apple trees, a pear tree and a large stand of rasberries. We're not very good gardeners yet, but we tried a small plot that yielded portions for a few meals.
