Buxton Manor Redefined (7/2008) : Buxton Manor just got a facelift. In 2008, Parsons, WV-based Trinity Designs removed 50-year-old "Insul-brick" siding (an asphault shingle-style siding material) and installed cement composite plank siding and a steel roof. We sealed, caulked and painted it. For the summer of 2009 we are shoring up an outbuilding on the property and building a sauna inside it. The building has been used to house chickens, store vegetables and as a storage building. The sauna is almost complete and will be up and running in November. In 2010 we'll complete the project with new siding on the building.

Fruits, Vegetables, Flowers : A greenhouse has recently been erected by Master Gardener Ben Nelson. There will be great veggies all summer for the lucky folks who stop by. To prepare for the bounty, I've put Mark to work with a couple of the square-foot gardens Ben built. The yard at Buxton Manor in Thomas is full of surprises. Years ago, the Lenceks carefully planted flowers along the fence so that color stretches from Snow Drops in the early spring to Chinese Lanterns in the fall. There are also sugar maples, apple trees, a pear tree and a large stand of rasberries. We're not very good gardeners yet, but we tried a small plot that yielded portions for a few meals.

Lawn Games Extravaganza (5/2008) : Our friends and neighbors in Thomas, WV, Rob and Shannon, joined us in hosting the 1st Annual Lawn Games Extravaganza over Memorial Day Weekend. Kind of like a Gatsby bash in Canaan, if you will. It was so much fun we did it again on Labor Day Weekend.

Fall in Canaan 2007 : Big Clare came to visit to see the fall leaves in Canaan. We had a lovely time and the leaves were spectacular. Most of our explorations were within a short distance of Thomas and Davis - so much to see, so close to home. A big THANKS to Mama for coming out to the hinterlands!

The House : The house, dubbed Buxton Manor by friends, is located near the intersection of Buxton and 2nd Sts. in Thomas, WVA. It was built around 1920 late in the town's coal boom and was owned by the Lenceks, who immigrated from Slovenia, for more than 80 years. We purchased it in late 2004 and have been fixing it up and enjoying the pace of life in Tucker County.
