Barcelona, Spain (9/2008) : Barcelona is said to always bristle with activity but it is at its best at night. Our visit happened to coincide with a major fall festival - La Merce. The old town area where we stayed was packed with people, even at 2 a.m., and an endless series of "fireworks parades," live music and good food left us pining for a trip back to this exciting Spanish city. This trip coincided with Clare's 40th birthday (or as Clare likes to say: "All of Barcelona was celebrating my birthday!").

Venetian Lagoon, Italy 9/2006 : The Venetian Lagoon is a vast protected waterway on the coast of Italy with the beautiful city of Venice as its centerpiece. We chartered a houseboat in Chioggia, Italy and piloted our way up to Venice and the surrounding islands. Stormy weather - a schirroco storm system - kept the boat moored for almost half the trip, but we still got the chance to approach Venice from the water and see other towns such as Chioggia, a large fishing port south of Venice that is, unlike tourist-choked Venice, still very much a working city with centuries old canals. Venice itself is every bit as mesmerizing as its reputation suggests. Cutting through the tourist veneer takes some effort but we managed to find some out of the way places to explore on our daily 8 hour walking tours. We also took short trips to the nearby islands of Murano and Burano, both beautiful but overwhelmed by tourists, and spent our time in the area moored on Le Vignole, a Venetian island set aside for agriculture. Finally, we moored at Pellestrina and Alberoni, two fishing towns on barrier islands that protect the lagoon.

Pompeii, Italy 9/2006 : Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D. and smothered the city of Pompeii in poisonous gases and ashes, leaving behind a treasure trove of archeological history. We took buses and trains from the tip of the Sorrentine Penninsula to spend a day at Pompeii. It is one of five major archeological sites on the western coast of southern Italy and one of the premier archeological sites in the world. It is an astounding place: the city is far larger and better preserved than we had imagined. We could have spent an entire week there and still not seen everything.

New York Reunion (8/2008) : New York was the setting for a college roommate reunion to celebrate our 40th birthdays. Denise, Jennifer, Laurie and Clare spent the first weekend in August 2008 enjoying the city and catching up. It was Denise's actual birthday and Laurie isn't quite the Big 4-0 but who is counting?? We were greeted at the Ritz Carlton with birthday cake and champagne. Our time was filled with a Broadway show, dinners out and shopping. We all had a fabulous time and are already plotting our next trip!
