24 Hours of Big Bear, 6/2007 : Mountain bike racing for 24 hours straight was popularized by outdoor entrepreneurs based in the Canaan Valley and the 24 Hours of Big Bear derives from the original 24 Hours of Canaan. Relay teams - and some soloists - race laps to see how many laps they can complete from noon to noon over a weekend. The course at Big Bear Camplands, a private RV camping resort in northern WVA, is 13 miles of rocky single-track and double-track trails with about 1,500 ft. in elevation change. Mark did his first race with Team Chunder Pig, made up from boating and mountain biking friends in the Allegheny Highlands region. We - a most serious group of competitors, wink, wink - did better than expected but didn't come close to the best competition. Everyone completed three laps and Mark beat admittedly-low pre-race time expectations. The race was fun - even at 3 a.m. - as more than 500 people gathered to test their endurance in this unusual fashion. Thanks to Honey Smith for taking many of these pictures during the race.

It might be said he drank from the dog bowl of youth, because at 11 1/2 everyone still thinks he's a puppy. Unleashed, he tends to stray but turns up saying "where have you been, I've been looking all over for you." At home on the sofa or in a thick Allegheny forest, you will know who's talking when he speaks.
